Mark Blom Dances His Way to Fencing

March 25, 2014--Mark has been a WFA fencer for about three years. Recently we discovered some very interesting facts regarding his background. Mark danced ballet professionally, for about 12 years with companies in South Carolina and Florida. Mark worked as a guest artist with a number of small companies in the Southeast. Frequently Mark was cast as the bad guy.

WFA's Matthew Comes Duels His Way Up

February, 2014--The USA Fencing spotlight shone on the Pacific Northwest this February in Portland at the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships, and WFA’s Matthew Comes responded with one of his best national event performances to date. Competing in his third-consecutive Junior Olympics (JOs), 15-year-old Matthew, supported by coaches Kevin Mar and Newel Rice, family, friends, and WFA clubmates cheering him on, fenced in the Men’s Junior Epee on Friday, February 14.

With over 190 Junior (13- to 20-year-old) fencers from the U.S. and Canada, Matthew, a B-rated fencer, drew a tough pool group with three “A”-rated fencers, another “B,” a “C,” and an “E.” Sticking to his strengths, Matthew went 3-3 in pools, seeding him 89th going into the direct eliminations (DEs). In the DEs, Matthew started with a close 15-13 win over an A-rated fencer from New Jersey seeded 40th. Next came an A-rated fencer from France, fencing for Notre Dame University. Matthew was defeated 15-6. For the day Matthew end up 56th overall. A year ago at the JOs in Baltimore, Matthew finished 86thin the Junior event.

Matthew arrived Sunday ready for the Men’s Cadet (13- to 17-year-old) event. Over 200 fencers registered, with many vying for national points and a spot on the U.S. National Cadet team headed to the Junior & Cadet World Championships in Bulgaria next month. He almost swept his pool with a 5-1 performance. His only pool loss was to the fencer who would ultimately place 2nd overall. Coming out of pools, Matthew earned a first-round bye and proceeded to win his two next DE bouts 15-8 and 15-11. Next was the number-two seed out of pools. Matthew fought hard and smart throughout the bout, but lost 12-15. Matthew placed 23rd for the event – meaning he made the top 32 and achieved a significant improvement from a year ago in Baltimore where he finished 156th.

Matthew began his fencing career in the Summer of 2010 at WFA’s week-long fencing camp at Northshore YMCA, led by Donovan Kawewehi and Kevin. He moved to WFA’s satellite classes at the Y taught by Donovan and Rachel Hughes. Gaining skills to advance, he attended regular weekly classes at the Issaquah club until late Spring 2011, and began private lessons with Kevin and Newel. Input from former WFA coaches Eugenio Salas and Arthur Urman helped motivate Matthew to compete in his first tournament, 2011’s Bladefest in Tacoma, when he was still just 12 years old - and he still didn’t come in last.

Matthew placed 23rd for the event — meaning he made the top 32...

From that first tournament he has moved to compete in local, regional, and national events. At the 2013 USA Summer Nationals, in Columbus, Ohio, he gave a solid performance and earned his long sought-after D rating. A strong start for the 2013-2014 season, he quickly earned his C with top 8th finish at a Columbia International Division 1A regional tournament in  Beaverton, Oregon. At the January 2014 Battle in Seattle, the largest event in Washington fencing history, he placed 16th and earned his B. Matthew is working to achieve an A rating and higher national points in his near future, but is more focused on improving his fencing tactics and reaching the finals strip at his next events--in particular, the USA Fencing Summer Nationals in June. As in 2013, they will also take place in Columbus, Ohio.
